JD Power: Auto Insurers Only Sign 2% of Shoppers

On average, auto insurance companies quote and successfully sign only 2 percent of all auto insurance shoppers, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Insurance Escaped Shopper Study(SM) released today.

The inaugural study examines the behaviors of auto insurance customers who recently shopped for a new insurance company. The study, which aims to better understand why shoppers either avoided, ignored or considered but did not purchase from insurance companies, also profiles 26 of the largest personal auto insurers in the United States.

“While it is surprising to learn that most auto insurance companies only capture 2 percent of shoppers, the reality is that the majority of shoppers in the market are either unaware of a particular insurance company or choose to ignore them for one reason or another,” said Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the insurance practice at J.D. Power and Associates. “Unwillingness to consider a brand is generally caused by a previous experience with a company, a lack of bundled or desired options, or feedback from friends and family. In particular, the impact of recommendations and referrals is critical to whether or not a prospective customer will even consider an insurance company.”

The study finds that 36 percent of auto insurance customers have actively shopped for a new insurer in the past year. On average, 38 percent of shoppers do not recognize various insurance companies examined in the study, while an additional 39 percent of shoppers ignore certain companies during their shopping process, completely excluding them from their consideration set. Additionally, 6 percent of shoppers avoid the average insurance company and indicate that they would never consider them for their insurance needs. Overall, only 18 percent of prospective customers consider any given insurance company when they shop.

“What’s most significant is that less than one-half of all shoppers who investigate or research an insurance company never ask for a quote,” said Bowler. “Since most insurance companies only gather personal information as part of the quote process, they have a very narrow view of the marketplace. Insurers have no way to measure how many more prospects escaped earlier in the shopping process — whether they were driven away by a cumbersome quote process, a non-responsive agent or misconceptions about price or service quality.”

The study also finds that most prospective customers who consider an insurance company but do not request a quote gather information via the Internet, with more than 60 percent visiting the insurance company’s Web site or responding to an Internet advertisement or blog posting. Insurance companies lose more prospective customers, on average, through the Web channel compared with telephone and in-person sales channels. In fact, traditional phone and in-person sales channels achieve a 52 percent close rate, on average, while online channels successfully close sales less than 20 percent of the time.

“One interesting competitive tactic being implemented in the industry is for one insurer to offer quotes for multiple competitors,” said Bowler. “One in three shoppers who receive a competitor quote from the company they are currently investigating don’t bother to call or visit that competing company directly to obtain a real quote from them. This suggests that those insurance companies who implement this strategy are successfully directing shoppers away from their competition before these competitors even know they were being considered by a consumer.”

The 2008 Insurance Escaped Shopper Study is based on responses from more than 8,400 auto insurance shoppers. The study was fielded in April 2008.

Sound of sports car engine ‘arouses women’

The sound of a luxury sports car revving its engine makes women feel sexy, according to a survey.

A study tested men’s and women’s responses to the roaring engines of three luxury cars, in addition to an everyday vehicle.

The 40 participants listened to the recordings of a Maserati, a Lamborghini and a Ferrari, along with a Volkswagon Polo, before having a saliva specimen collected.

They believed loud noises, such as the revving of an engine, were likely to have an arousing effect on an individual’s physiology.

By measuring levels of testosterone, a hormone which indicates arousal, the study was able to measure the car’s stimulating effects.

The results found 100 per cent of female participants had a significant increase in testosterone secretion after listening to the Maserati, compared to only half for men.

Men fared better at the sound of a Lamborghini, with 60 per cent showing a testosterone increase.

Psychologist David Moxon, who conducted the study commissioned by motor insurer Hiscox, said: “We saw significant peaks, particularly in women.

“The roar of a luxury car engine does cause a primeval physiological response.”

He added the sound of an average car engine actually led to a decreased level of testosterone.

Despite the global downturn, wealthy overseas car lovers have not been deterred from ordering the latest luxury models.

Car dealership HR Owen revealed last week brands such as the Ferrari Scuedria (£180,000) and the Maserati Gran Turismo (£76,000) were attracting unexpectedly strong interest.

Marcelli Podiums in Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship Debut

Barrie, Ontario (September 15th 2008) – U.S. F2000 Championship Series standout Kyle Marcelli wraps up his Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship debut with a 2nd place finish in the season finale event at Mosport International Raceway this past weekend.

JL Racing, one of Canada’s premier sport sedan racing teams decided  one week prior to put the young open-wheel talent behind the wheel of there factory supported Saab 93 Turbo for the season finale of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship.

“Kyle impressed us very much. He was able to get right up to speed with the leaders despite only a few minutes in the car on Friday” said John Lockhart, “His drive from back of the pack to 4th on Saturday really showcased Kyle’s talent, and then his drive today was further proof that Kyle has a big future ahead of him in racing. I am glad we could put this opportunity together for him and look forward to more in the future.” Says team owner John Lockhart

With less than 15 minutes of practice in the car on Friday Marcelli was put to the test in Saturday morning’s qualifying session. Marcelli showed very fast pace in the car right away topping the charts early in the session eventually ending P2. Unfortunately due to some miss-communication in the pit lane, Marcelli and the JL Racing team were disqualified for leaving the pits before directed. This put Marcelli to the back of the field for Saturday’s race.

As the race went green Marcelli quickly moved the Saab 93 up multiple positions before finishing the race P4. As Saturday’s position determines your starting position for Sundays feature race, Marcelli lined up on the outside of the second row. Again the young race car driver showed his talents as he battled with the lead duo crossing the stripe P2 for his first ever Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship race.

“I have to first thank JL Racing for giving me the opportunity to get behind the wheel of there factory supported Saab 93. It was definitely a different driving style than what I was used to but overall it was a blast. To be able to rub fenders and have such close racing action was a lot of fun. The biggest challenges to get used to were first and foremost the weight of the car, other challenges to get used to were the brakes and the front wheel drive, overall the car was very competitive and we were able to move from the rear of the field to put it on the podium so I’m happy. ” Says Marcelli

Marcelli is now preparing for the final two rounds of the U.S. based F2000 Championship Series as he heads out Tuesday night for the new Thunderbolt Race Track in New Jersey. Marcelli will be looking to add a couple more 2-litre wins to his resume before he wraps up another successful season.
