Used cars can be wrecks in disguise so you need to be careful about which car you select at the end of your search. Unless you are truly satisfied with the look of a car, don’t even think about paying for it.

It is apparent that we are in some desperate situations:brbrTexas (where the large oil refineries are) just experienced a major hurricane disaster and this is the exact climate for high gas price increasebrbrLehman Brothers just filed bankruptcy and Wall Street is scrambling for help. This is another disaster for high gas prices.brbrWe are in the process of an election and the economy is a steady topic, but there is no immediate help with the gas prices.brbrChavez chased the UN ambassador out of his country and his country does supply gas to the US. Hi there…
I’m writing to you from the relative safety of Ohio. We got buffeted around a little from the storm, but it wasn’t too bad at our place. Just branches down and a lot of rain. I certainly hope you are doing ok and/or recovering from the weekend.
I promised an interview with the inventor of the Auto-flush toilets, but I wasn’t able to track him down. Instead, I thought I’d try to interview one of the public service functionaries that ok the installation of these monstrosities in public bathrooms. This didn’t work out either.
So, I’ll interview myself as a victim of the auto-flush toilets. Here goes:
Jeff: So, any reaction to the auto-flush toilets that you’d like to share?
Myself: Well, I don’t normally do interviews. There is a consultation fee to discuss…
Jeff: I’ll give you a check later if you wish…
Myself: Let me talk to my lawyer. (Hushed whispering on cell phone) Ok.
Jeff: Ok? Is that your answer?
Myself: (slightly officious) No, Ok I will answer your questions.
Jeff: Great…so, any reactions to the Auto-Flush toilets that you’d like to share?
Myself: They were a totally unsatisfying experience. I have not felt this frustrated since I found out that Frontage Road is not the same road, but different roads that run the perimeter of freeways.
Jeff: That was over 20 years ago self…let it go.
Myself: Maybe I should. Why can’t these auto-flush toilets get re-invented? Here are some ideas:
1. a meter that measures the water displacement in the bowl
2. pressure sensitive nodes in the seat that can decipher the difference between a lean and a full on standup from the seat.
3. a knob or lever that can be pulled to “manually” flush the toilet
After this, the interview subject left the room, and the interview was over. Tune in next time for another item that I would fix if I was Captain Kirk.

Lots of stuff from the Stereogum world involving auto-tune. I’ve been mistaking the vocoder box with the auto-tune plug-in everybody and their mom has been using (here’s the
difference if you really wanted to know). Most notable
offenders users being Kanye and Lil Wayne.
Kanye’s newest album (most likely oozing with auto-tune…Love Lockdown was) is going to be called 808’s and Heartbreaks. Emo much? Pretty cool title, I think, considering he’s done with his ’school’ trilogy. Its set to release on 12/16. Biggest album of the Christmas season?
SNL premiered this last Saturday with Michael Phelps as host and Lil Wayne as musical guest. Didn’t watch the show, but Stereogum has the auto-tune heavy videos posted. I’ll put em up here also, because they’re actually OK, with sprinklings of horrible-ness (Wayne’s guitar playing? not so much).

Cash From Quatar for Fisker
Fisker, the maker of the upcoming Karma plug-in hybrid sports sedan (all-electric range of 50 miles with gas engine kicking-in to charge batteries over that, similarly to the GM Volt), has announced it has closed a $65-million round of financing led by an affiliate of the Qatar Investment Authority, a state-owned, state-funded sovereign wealth fund. Apparently the QIA wants to “strengthen the country’s economy by diversifying into new asset classes.” In any case, this new hydrocarbon-money should help Fis…

Several years ago a Pennsylvania police officer pulled over a motorist in a routine traffic stop, asked for the driver’s license and registration, and called the 800 number on the back of the insurance card. But what they got was pay-per-minute phone-sex operator. It didn’t take much deductive skill to realize that the insurance card was forged, and over the next few weeks the officer and his partner encountered more and more fake insurance cards.
Forged Insurance Card Production
Forged insurance cards can be produced in minutes on your run-of-the-mill computer by scanning a legitimate insurance card; changing the policy number, vehicle ID number, and issue date; and printing it out. It’s as easy as that. The forged auto insurance cards generally cost between $300 and $500, less than half the cost of a legitimate card.
In some states– such as Pennsylvania and North Carolina, to name a few– don’t require proof of insurance when registering a car, which makes these auto insurance scams that much easier to pull off. In other states you’re required to have proof of insurance, your car’s title, and proper identification. Furthermore, insurance companies that fit into the latter category are typically required to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles if there is an issue with the registered car (e.g. the insurance has lapsed). Then the DMV can suspend the offender’s license and registration, making it easier for the police to catch offenders.
Fake Insurance Card Effects
The problem of auto insurance scams isn’t terribly widespread, but it can affect other people in the community tremendously: In a two-car collision the person with insurance– regardless of whether they were at fault or not– has to foot the bill for the driver with a fake insurance card, which could further increase the first driver’s insurance payments. In addition, if an uninsured driver hits a pedestrian, the victim is forced to pay the hospital bills whether they have health insurance or not.
Statistics on auto insurance scams are scarce, so no one knows exactly how widespread the problem is. Police officers, like the ones who pulled over the suspect with the phone-sex number on his insurance card, are now listing the numbers of the major auto insurance companies in order to check the validity of drivers’ insurance cards with relative ease.
Falsifying insurance is a bad idea. Police are on the lookout for it, and it is costing law-abiding citizens millions. Be aware.

Even the most rough and tumble car junkie has his artistic side. In between dropping engines and overhauling a transmission, some grease monkeys partake in more artistic endeavors. Art, as we shall soon see, is extremely subjective.
The requirements I’ve chosen to recognize these as sculptures are as follows: It needs to be made almost entirely of auto parts and it has to not be just a car.

Carhenge is the most publicized auto part sculpture to date. It was featured on Discovery Channel’s Biker Build Off and has since become a Mecca for people across the U.S. who have little else to do than see a bunch of cars in a field somewhere in Ohio. 4/5

Like most auto parts sculptures, I haven’t a clue what they’re called, who made them or what their supposed to be. This one appears to be a collection of bumpers leaning on one another topped off by a broken tuba and an art deco lamp. Well done. 3/5

This piece represents the hopelessness of life in the city and the toll it takes on our spirit and psyche. It’s the organized confusion that life has become, the rusty metal that is our moral decay… or it’s a bunch of exhaust pipes stuck in the ground. I’ll get back to you on that one. 2/5

It’s hard to rate some auto parts sculptures as they could just be a pile of garbage. I’m inclined to say this is just a pile of garbage but Google has it marked as a sculpture so I’ll just give this a 1/5 for colour coordination.

It’s always a treat to see a sculpture made by someone who lacks an understanding of anatomy. This bipedal dinosaur certainly has a reptilian look so it can’t be faulted in that department. I’m giving this a 5/5 because clearly the sculpture ate that little girl.

Unlike most auto parts sculptures, this one actually looks like something that exists. It’s a horse, an anatomically correct one at that. This one easily gets 5/5 and it didn’t even have to kill any children.
