5 Reasons to Feel Good About the Car Buying Industry

Despite the fact that gas prices are through the roof, the value of SUVs is dropping fast, and Detroit may be experiencing more job cuts in the near future, there are reasons to feel good about the car buying industry. Here are 5 of them:

  1. Hybrids, Electric Batteries, and Hydrogen Fuel Cells - The progress being made with alternative powered cars is significant. They may not be making an impact tomorrow, but they will come sooner than later.
  2. Smarter Rides - From fuel displacement systems to collision avoidance software, the technology we are wielding these days is astounding, and making the roads safer every day.
  3. Coolness Factor - New cars these days are looking damn good. Not to mention the nifty features that continue to make the driving experience more enjoyable.
  4. Automakers Responding Quickly to the Market - If the SUV market had tanked 10 years ago, Detroit’s car makers would have been extremely slow to react. Today, Ford has already said it will cut production and avoid building SUVs that the dealers will not be able to sell.
  5. The final reason to feel good about the car buying industry, is without a doubt a self plug, but I think a valid one. EasyAutoSales.com is embracing the internet’s social presence in a way that other car classifieds sites are not. These days, with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, FriendFeed, and many many more, the web of connection cast by an individual across the web is nothing short of remarkable. Imagine if you could use that massive social network to help you buy and sell cars. EasyAutoSales.com is integrating itself into this web 2.0 phenomenon , and the car buying industry will be better for it.

What makes you feel good about the car buying industry (or bad for the matter if you think this is all a crock of ….)?

Car Loans … Almost There!

When I went home last weekend, my stepdad informed me that I only have ten more car payments left until my car is paid off. You may not think that’s exciting, but I have had the car since 2004 and have made every single car payment on my own (something not many people my age can say - at least people that I know). I still remember the day I picked out my car. It was unexpected - there were certain circumstances regarding my first car and I ended up being unable to keep it. My Corolla has been my pride and joy. But, without my parents’ ability to cosign the lease with me, I wouldn’t have been able to get the car because I had no established credit at the time we bought the car. I didn’t have the money to buy the car up front, either, so being able to qualify for a Car Loan was really helpful. Nowadays, you can even look up Online Car Loans if you choose not to do a loan through the car dealership.

How To Insure A Used Car

Used Car

Every standard auto insurance policy has different kinds of coverages. This applied to majority of the auto insurance policies that are made available for you by the thousands of auto insurance providers in the market. In general, these terms can be flexible depending on the type of auto insurance coverage you choose and the amount that you are willing to shell out for the auto insurance.
However, almost all of the states passed on an insurance law that requires drivers to have at least one auto insurance policy.
There are even other states that require drivers to present a a proof of insurance before they can register their car. Therefore, regardless of your car’s worth, you will definitely need to secure an auto insurance for your car.

A liability insurance are required for drivers from every state.
Almost all auto insurance policies provide a liability coverage section that serves as a financial shield from the liability claims against you when you cause injury to other people or properties due to a car accident. There is a required minimum level of coverage for this area in almost every state. The reason for this law is that drivers who are at-fault must have the capacity to cover expenses of victims who encountered accident-related losses. But the minimum coverage required in most states do not even compensate for the costs incurred during a serious accident. So if you wish to be fully protected by your liability claims, your liability coverage must then be more than that of your state’s requirements.

There are coverages that are required in some states and optional for others.
Medical payments coverage and uninsured/under insured motorist coverage are two of the coverages some states require as optional. Medical payments coverage covers the medical expenses that you, your family and the other non-family passengers have incurred during the accident. Uninsured/under insured motorist coverage, on the other hand, covers the losses you and the others suffer in an accident caused by a driver who is not insured or has an insurance policy that is not sufficient to support you and cover the damages. If these insurance coverages are not required in your state, it is better to just get an auto insurance that is based on your needs, on the circumstances, and the environment you are in. Moreso, it is advisable to first consult your auto insurance agent or provider for a more in depth knowledge on these types of coverages.

Collision and comprehensive insurance is not required in virtually every state.
The collision and comprehensive coverage provided in your auto insurance policy covers any physical damage your car may have incurred in collisions and other kinds of accidents that can cause damage to your car; this could be fire or falling objects. This collision and comprehensive coverage may also cover losses associated with car theft. But still, the worth of your car still plays a big part in gouging if you need this type of auto insurance coverages or not.

anatomy of an auto theft or the end of the Astro van

It’s not often that the local news crosses over into my independent alternative artist based life. Winnipeg has an auto theft problem, with underage kids learning the knowledge and skills to steal many types of vehicles. My van was targeted a couple of weeks ago.

They punched in the locking mechanism,

smashed the steering column to release the steering wheel lock and gain access to the wiring to hotwire the ignition,

got into an accident bending the rear bumper and twisting the body so the doors won’t close,

and they had even stopped whatever activity they were up too while driving around to have sex…..twice.

Autopac(the insurance company) deemed it not worth repairing and wrote it off.

I have mixed thoughts about the whole thing.

Classic Car Porn

As mentioned below, I today visited a classic car rally at the motorbike circuit in Valencia. I am an avowed petrolhead (even though I don’t currently own a car) and I love events like this. In fact I prefer classic cars to the more modern ones, as there seems to be more of a sense of romance to them. These days most modern cars feel like washing machines - efficient, computer-controlled, plastic and immensely dull. In contrast, classic motors feel exciting, exotic and rather sexy. Here is a selection of what I saw.
This is a Ferrari Testarossa from the 1980’s. It’s brash, not very well made and often to be found in episodes of Miami Vice. It is, however, an icon of performance car engineering.
This is a late 1960’s Ford Mustang, of the type that Tom Cruise can be seen driving at the very beginning of ‘War of the Worlds’. It has a socking great V8 engine, but couldn’t go round a corner for all the money in the world. But as American icons go, this is up there with the hamburger and coke bottle.
And finally a 1950’s Porsche of the type, as I was eager to point out to anyone passing, that James Dean killed himself in. Without a doubt the most famous and glamorous car that Porsche has ever produced, and one of the all time great sports cars.
And so that’s it, a small selection of the best I saw on a rather overcast day at the ‘Circuito de Valencia’. There were no Astons or Jaguars, but enough other stuff to keep an 8 year old boy (mental age, obviously) like me more than happy.

Stunning sports car from Hybrid Technologies is aiming for 220 mpg

hybridtech200mpg.jpg

Over the years we’ve seen plenty of ultra cool rides that manage to combine green living with high performance by going electric. The problem is that America’s love of the open road doesn’t jibe well with the 200-250 mile range of most electric cars, so hybrids are a good way to stay green without putting you on a leash.

This upcoming model from Hybrid Technologies is slated to be available within a couple of years with a choice of two different drivetrains. An all electric version with a 150-170 mile range, and a gasoline-electric hybrid that aims to capture the Automotive X Prize by managing at least 220 mpg.

This sounds amazing if they manage to pull it off, but for now let’s stick it in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” file.

Adventures in Used Car Shopping

I’ve spent the last few days looking at used cars for Hilary and Nathan. This proved to be a very interesting experience, as I used Craigslist to guide me along the way. The people you can meet driving all over Southern California looking for that perfect car can be quite entertaining!

I spoke with and met several individuals, getting glimpses into their lives, often leaving me wanting to know more about them, my curiousity piqued. But the two individuals that I really wanted to share with you were these:

First I met an actor living in a Beverly Hills apartment who was selling a Ford Escort. Maybe you’ll recgonize him, his name is Barry Ratcliffe. Click the link to see his latest work.

He was a totally nice guy, and I would have bought the car from him except that it had more miles on it than I really wanted. He was so nice, in fact, that he let Diego use his potty twice, once for #1, then later for #2! While Giancarlo was helping Diego in the bathroom, Barry gave me a bottle of water and then motioned for me to come and look through a doorway that was just off the kitchen. He pointed at a woman sleeping in a poofy white bed, dead to the world, and laughed at her saying how she’s been working very hard and was completely knocked out. I felt that I was looking at something very inappropriate! I mean, I know that if my significant other brought some stranger who was shopping for economy cars to the doorway of my bedroom while I was sleeping and laughed at me, I would be furious! Sleeping is very private! Secondly, how did she not wake up? Not only were we gazing into the room while Barry laughingly spoke of her exhaustion, but Diego was talking in his normal unabashed voice about going pee-pee!

Next I met a young construction worker in the hills of Glendale named Austin who was selling a Kia Spectra that he bought from the police impound yard. He was wearing a tank top, and he was pretty good looking, except that he had the bushiest armpits in America. These weren’t just hairy, they were out. Of. Control. I kid you not! The hair poofed out like sprays of seaweed waving in the water, calling all attention away from his chiseled cheek bones, perfect nose, and piercing eyes. I was struggling not to stare, thinking vaguely about the manscaping that needed to be done. While we were looking at the car, his mother came out to the street, dragging heavily on a cigarette, and reminded him to buy water and lettuce when he was done with me. I’m certain she was one of the Barbi twins.

As she commented on what a great car the Kia was, Austin took the cigarette out of his mother’s mouth, put it to his, and pulled smoke deep into this lungs. Once again, I felt like I was witnessing something that I shouldn’t, as if sharing a cigarette with your Barbi twin mother was somehow bordering on the incestuous. In any case, I didn’t feel comfortable with the car and I moved on.We ended up buying a Daewoo station wagon from a rental place in Downey. Yes, Downey, home of the late, great Karen Carpenter. Perhaps it was because this was the best deal. Perhaps it was due to the low miles on the car. Maybe it was due to the practicality of the car. Or, maybe it was because this was a place of business, something I am accustomed to, and there was no chance I would be shown things that maybe I shouldn’t be shown.

Ford snubs UAW, commits to ‘global’ small car manufacturing …

(snip)”Ford’s ‘Global Car’ To Roll Out in Mexico
Small, Efficient Auto Designed to Be Sold Anywhere

By Manuel Roig-Franzia
Washington Post Foreign Service
Saturday, May 31, 2008; D01

MEXICO CITY, May 30 — President Felipe Calderón announced Friday that Ford will build its new fuel-efficient Fiesta “global car” in suburban Mexico City and upgrade two plants here as part of a $3 billion investment, the largest in Mexican history by a foreign manufacturer.

The decision is a major setback for the United Auto Workers union, which has pushed Ford and other manufacturers to invest in U.S. plants. But it was a coup for the Mexican economy after years of losing manufacturing jobs to China and other Asian countries.

Industry analysts have long predicted that Ford would unveil a global car — a subcompact designed to be easily built and marketed anywhere in the world — but it was unclear until Friday which country would win the lucrative manufacturing deal. A UAW spokesman did not return calls seeking comment.

In an appearance Friday at Mexico’s presidential palace, Los Pinos, Ford chief executive Alan R. Mulally said the decision to build the Fiesta is part of a plan to realign the company’s manufacturing toward smaller cars and crossovers — models between small cars and SUVs.

As gas prices have skyrocketed, Ford has suffered in particular because it relies strongly on sales of trucks and SUVs. Through April, light vehicles accounted for just 36 percent of Ford’s sales, compared with about 60 percent at Toyota and Honda, David Whiston, an auto analyst at Morningstar, said in an interview.

“What this shows about Ford is that it has realized it needs to improve its vehicle mix to be much more skewed to fuel-efficient cars than trucks and SUVs,” he said.

Mulally said Ford will start building the Fiesta in 2010 at a plant in Cuautitlán, a city in the state of Mexico, which borders Mexico City to the north. The plant now makes pickup trucks.

The company also will upgrade a transmission plant in the central state of Guanajuato in partnership with Getrag and build a new engine line at its plant in the northern state of Chihuahua. The company plans to invest $2.4 billion, with an additional $600 million coming from its suppliers and partners, Mulally said.

Calderón hailed the deal as “a great day for the industry, for employment and for Mexico.” Since taking office in December 2006, Calderón has been consumed by a war with drug cartels and has struggled to stimulate economic growth and stem migration to the United States.

The Ford deal is likely to create 4,500 manufacturing jobs and generate more than 25,000 others, Mulally and Calderón said. Jorge de los Santos, director of Mexico City’s infrastructure development corporation, said in an interview that the new jobs will be “great for Mexico” but that the country needs to redouble its efforts to attract “knowledge-based” white-collar jobs.

Mexico, the world’s No. 11 auto-manufacturing country, has a long history with Ford, which began building cars here in the 1920s. The company has sold 12 million Fiestas since the car’s introduction in 1976. The small vehicles are popular with the commuters who clog Mexico City’s streets, and they sell well in other parts of Latin America and Asia but were sold in the U.S. only in the late 1970s.

Ford announced last week that it would not meet its longstanding goal of returning to profitability in 2009 and would be forced to make layoffs. The company reported a 12 percent drop in auto sales last month compared with April 2007.”(snip)

Basically, this means that Ford will not be investing money to re-tool US auto plants to produce small cars (or any other type of vehicles) as demand for the trucks and SUV’s and big cars presently made at these US auto plants goes into the toilet.

Scuttlebut has it that Ford’s decision to build in Mexico rather than Asia was based on some of the following …

- it may lead to future transfer offers for existing US Ford employees to Mexico, which if turned down would would reduce Ford’s ‘legacy costs’ i.e. a worker who ‘quits’ versus accepting a transfer can be denied benefits, whereas a worker who is laid off retains some benefits

- the supply chain is much shorter and much more controllable versus Asian subcontractors

- the 4-6 week Pacific Ocean freight shipping time delay and associated shipping costs are reduced to a few days from Mexico. Also, the potential risk of strike by US union dock workers at Pacific ports (i.e. Long Beach) is eliminated via overland rail freight from Mexico into Texas.

- the potential risk of environmental / foreign business regulation changes by Asian governments is eliminated

- currency risk is reduced (or eliminated altogether in the future if the Amero scenario comes to pass)
